Austria is now at that crazy time of year, when old traditions take over.
The current one is the Perchten/Krampus beasts! Two words for essentially the same creature. These are people dressed as hairy horned devils.
No, it is not just a few people having a fancy dress party, there are actually clubs in most villages that design costumes and designate those who will dress up as the Perchten beast and amble through village streest ringing large bells of all sorts and pretend the beating of supposed naughty children.(not surprising that Austrians have nightmares even when they become adults!)
The tradition is that the Perchten is all about driving out the spirits of winter. The Krampus is about chastising naughty children, and then St Nicolas coming along and chases out the Krampus/Perchen
The wild jangling of bells, shaggy pelts, curved horns and terrifying masks: When Krampus and Perchten run down the street, growling, half dancing, half stamping, every single spectator is left just a little unsettled. Krampus- and Perchten parades truly are an unforgettable experience, as much a part of Austria’s Christmas season as the famous Christkindlmarkt and the almost meditative Advent Singing. From the end of November until the beginning of December, you can also experience this unique folk custom in the City of Salzburg itself. While no one would claim Perchten parades are peaceful, they will definitely leave you with lasting memories. An ancient tradition you can only experience in this part of the Alpine world.
